Townsend says: “If you look at some of our accounts - like the International Space Station (ISS) account in relation to the big NASA account, the audience overlap between the two is about a third. Two-third of the audience is completely new and original.”
Having separate accounts allows people to customise their experience, he adds. The main account gives you a little bit of everything. The other accounts give you detailed information on a subject of your interest. A year ago, the team created a NASA page on Giphy - an online database for gif files. “We’ve got some great space gifs you can use in your conversation now,” says Townsend excitedly. They are now looking at the next social media platform NASA could join.
